Skill Scotland: supporting you into further study
Going to college or university can be an exciting, but daunting, experience. You might want to gain a new qualification to improve your prospects, or retrain for a new career. As well as boosting your earning potential, taking up a course of study can enable you to develop valuable skills and experience, study a subject you enjoy in more depth, and interact with people from different backgrounds. But how much will it cost? Are you entitled to any extra help? What are your rights?
Skill Scotland can offer information and advice on these issues, as well as helping you take the first steps towards applying to further or higher education. As part of the UK-wide organisation, Skill, our aim is to help disabled people across Scotland to maximise their potential in learning and employment. We do this by operating an information and advice service, producing information booklets and publications, and influencing key decision makers in partnership with disabled people.
Skill Scotland can provide information and advice on a number of issues, including:
- applying to college or university
- funding and benefits information, including the Disabled Students Allowance
- any additional support which you may require as a student
- your rights under the Disability Discrimination Act
- …. and many other issues.
Skill also produces a variety of free information booklets which you can access on the Skill website or by post, and regular news updates to keep you up to date with the latest news around education and disability. All our information booklets are available on the Skill website at www.skill.org.uk/info/infosheets.asp. You can access the Scotland pages at www.skill.org.uk/scotland.
Skill Scotland’s helpline operates from 1.30pm to 4.30pm Monday to Thursday or you can contact our office on 0131 475 2348.
